The concept was to convert and renovate the pre-war traditional character ‘tin and timber’ Queensland high-set bungalow to a two-level contemporary family home without losing its well-established proportions and natural beauty.

The house was raised one metre to accommodate family cars and provide a higher lower-level ceiling height. The benefit to the upper-level living was improved city views over the treetops of the nearby parkland.

Upper-level extensions were restrained to the rear so as not affect the traditional aesthetics of the street presentation.

The plan form was rationalised to provide an upper level fully open plan with visual flow from the formal porch front entry to the rear landscaped pool. The usable floor area was doubled, and all rooms are now bright and breezy.

Respected valuable componentry and ornamentation of the 1930’s house such as VJ walls, ‘lambs tongue’ timber trims, panelled doors, plaster ceilings, wall shelving, terrazzo flooring, leadlight windows were respected, retained and showcased.
