Pelvic floor physiotherapy assessments don’t always have to be invasive.
At Red Centre Health Focus, we use diagnostic ultrasound as a non-invasive tool to help assess pelvic floor muscle function, movement, and coordination in real time.
Using ultrasound imaging, we can observe how the pelvic floor muscles respond during contraction, relaxation, breathing, and functional movements. This can be particularly helpful for people who may feel uncomfortable with an internal examination, are experiencing pain, are early postpartum, or simply prefer an alternative assessment option.
A 2021 study published on PubMed found transabdominal ultrasound assessment of pelvic floor muscle contraction demonstrated excellent intra-rater reliability, with ICC values of 0.97–0.98 during contraction assessment (PMID: 3449). Additional 2021 research also supported ultrasound as a reliable method for pelvic floor muscle evaluation and rehabilitation guidance.
Importantly, internal examination remains the gold standard for assessing pelvic floor muscle strength, tone, and tissue function. However, diagnostic ultrasound provides a valuable non-invasive option that can still offer meaningful information to help guide assessment, education, and rehabilitation when internal examination is not appropriate or preferred.
Every assessment is individualised, and we work collaboratively with you to ensure you feel comfortable, informed, and supported throughout the process.

Still reminiscing on an awesome day at the West Mac’s Monster!
It always comes and goes way too quickly, but the energy, community and determination sticks around long after the finish line.
We’ve loved seeing so many participants back in the recovery centre this week earning their well deserved recovery after such an epic effort
