Our NRC Diet Formulation services are provided to both pet owners and commercial business. There is a huge gap in current canine wellness services, products and community knowledge. Few products cater for dogs with allergies, particularly with allergies to factory farmed meats like beef and chicken. So few pet food companies understand the importance of removing chemicals, hormones, preservatives

When discussing the risks of different pet foods, it’s important to look at the data.

Between January 2012 and December 2025, more than 352 million pounds of pet food were recalled due to pathogenic bacteria.

Of those recalls:
• 98.6% were kibble
• 0.59% were raw pet food

These numbers don’t prove all raw food is safe or all kibble is unsafe. They simply remind us to evaluate risk objectively rather than relying on assumptions.

Whatever you feed—raw, gently cooked, freeze-dried or kibble—look at sourcing, manufacturing standards, safety testing, recall history and transparency.

The goal isn’t to defend a feeding philosophy. The goal is to make informed decisions for the dogs that depend on us.

Your dog’s skin fully regenerates every three to four weeks. Whatever you’re feeding right now is building their next layer of skin and coat.

A month of poor nutrition shows up as dullness, flaking, and skin irritation.

Skin and coat condition is a reliable indicator of adequate nutritional intake. Using this as a measure along side other markers of nutritional status and routine bloods will assist you to ensure your dog’s diet is meeting its needs.

We’ve normalised so much in our dogs that we’ve forgotten what healthy actually looks like.

Dull coat, constant itching, stiff joints, bad breath, low energy. These get written off as “just part of aging,” but a body showing those signs is a body that’s struggling.

A healthy dog has steady energy, a shiny coat, consistent digestion and movement that looks effortless. That’s not a high bar, that’s baseline health, and it’s absolutely achievable when you stop accepting band-aids and start addressing what’s actually wrong.

Our dogs are already telling you how they feel. Are we listening?

When the gut lining is compromised, it doesn’t just show up as typical digestive issues. It can look like chronic itching, recurring infections, anxiety, or a dog that never fully recovers.

70% of the immune system lives in the gut, so when the gut is struggling, everything is.

Real food, targeted probiotics, and reducing toxic load are where we start. Want to learn more about what food can do for your dog? Comment CALL for a free 15min chat with Jackie from Functional Canine.

Nutrition is so much more nuanced than most people realise.

From gut health and behavior to aging, muscle maintenance, and disease prevention, the small choices made in the bowl every day can shape long-term health outcomes far more than people think 🐾

A lot of people still believe senior dogs should eat less protein.

As dogs age, maintaining muscle mass becomes more difficult, and inadequate protein intake can contribute to weakness, slower recovery, lower energy, and reduced resilience. The focus should be on highly digestible, high-quality protein sources, unless a dog has specific advanced kidney conditions requiring specific nutritional guidance.

As your scent gradually fades from the environment, your dog is constantly processing those changes, which may explain why they react differently when you’ve been gone for minutes versus hours.
