The INDICAR Programme covers a wide spectrum of research areas relevant for the European Research Area (ERA) including areas of biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, chemistry, genetics, physics, and nursing sciences. Cancer is a complex form of disease with serious implications not only for the affected individuals, but also for societies and health systems in Europe and world-wide. Cancer remains one of the main challenges of biomedical research and health sciences. Importantly, despite great research effort, various forms of cancers are increasing in the absolute numbers of cancer cases, morbidity and deaths; cancer is characterised by clinical heterogeneity, caused by a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors, most of which have not yet been identified or fully understood. Therefore, interdisciplinarity in cancer research is key to beat this disease.
