The "Flicker Vertigo" phenomenon is a stroboscopic effect that occurs when sunbeams or other flashes of light, at a certain angle or frequency, fall on helicopter rotor blades.
Triggered by low frequency (1-20Hz) strobe light, it can cause imbalance and overload of brain cell activity in humans, sometimes associated with loss of control, disorientation, rapid/erratic eye movements, and partial muscle paralysis.
In the "Flicker Vertigo" project between NXRT and PMMG, a realistic training environment (based on mixed reality) is being created for helicopter pilots with the help of a developed simulation product in order to train pilots in dealing with the "Flicker Vertigo" phenomenon and to prepare them for the associated dangers in everyday flying.
