📣 And the winner of Superscape 2024 is: »the Breathing Ground. (sub)terranean architecture as an environmental instrument« by Anna Orbanic! The Croatian architect convinced the jury with her submission for this years’ topic “FORM FOLLOWS ENVIRONMENT – Regenerative architecture”.

The project explores breathing systems and develops a ground bound building for the time of extreme climate. The building – through its shape, physiology and vertical extends – is seen as a climatic apparatus, providing a new public space underground, where temperatures remain stable throughout the year.
Through the underground construction, excavated material will allow for the ground above to expand and form wind exposed towers. As the whole structure grows, it creates an underground network (and above ground gardens) which provide a cooling effect for neighbouring buildings and the surrounding urban environment.

🟣 Yesterday, on October 15, 2024, the biennial Superscape prize – a joint venture of the non-profit developer WBV-GPA Wohnbauvereinigung für Privatangestellte and the private developer Lenikus Immobilien (in cooperation with Vienna Business Agency) for innovative and visionary architectural concepts – was awarded for the sixth time. The prize is endowed with € 10.000.

Our warmest congratulations to Anna Orbanic, winner of Superscape 2024!

A round of applause for the winner of this years Superscape award: The Grafted City by Alberto Roncelli! The italian architect conviced the jury with his take on this years topic GREEN SHIFT. Visions for sustainable living.

The project presents a critical reading of the anonymous spaces – the remains or leftovers – of today’s city and investigates a model of urban densification that is conceived to support the sustainable lifestyle of tomorrow. Especially the relevance of the subject for Vienna and many other European cities was striking. The jury statement points to Roncelli’s approach of raising awareness for the necessity of change, in the shape of both smaller and larger interventions.

During the award ceremony yesterday, October 17, 2022, the prize of 10.000 Euros was officially handed over!

🟢 presents the ➡ Reduce, Reuse, Recycle -Realtime Participatory Living by Alexander Grasser and Alexandra Parger (AT)

♻️The vision of sustainable living and resilient architecture is based on a human-centered approach that empowers inhabitants to customize and adapt their spaces throughout the different stages of their lives, creating an open architecture where variation, inclusion, and complexity emerge through participation. Using a real-time computer-aided participatory design process, individual, customized design ideas and compatible components are transformed into a coherent, collective, open architecture that incorporates "reduce, reuse, and recycle" as design guidelines while adapting to the regional context.♻️

This shortlist project investigates the public potential of Vienna’s courtyards with the aim of creating new forms of access and benefitting from the diversity of these existing spaces. Such optimisation of the urban realm through the exploitation of previously unused residual spaces is also facilitated by the densification of existing buildings through the addition of extra storeys and elements – constructional interventions with a targeted climatic impact. The inhabitants of the densified city benefit from a climatically diverse range of external spaces, additional living space and new connections at the scale of the neighbourhood.
