Feeling pulled in too many directions?
Here’s how getting punched in the face can make you more focused…
I have friends who are professional fighters, and they’re some of the most focused people I know.
You’d think getting punched for a living would scatter their focus, but it’s the opposite...
What I’ve discovered is that fighters have one key attribute that helps them avoid distraction:
Singularity of focus.
Their goal is simple: be the best fighter they can be.
This singular focus simplifies everything. It gives you clarity and purpose, making it easier to say no to distractions.
Drinks tonight?
No, I have training tomorrow.
Spend an hour on YouTube?
No, I need to be in bed early to recover.
Does it mean you’re never tempted to stay up late, doomscroll, or order UberEats?
Of course not—you’re still human.
But it makes the process easier because you’re not suffering from decision fatigue juggling a million things.
Now, this way of living has its downsides too.
You can become so singularly focused that you develop ‘tunnel vision,’ forgetting to nurture relationships and so on.
You might also risk becoming one-dimensional.
But here’s the thing…
You don’t have to sacrifice your relationships or your health to reach your big goal.
You simply need the right systems.
MMA fighters have systems to keep them on track:
- Grappling
- Boxing
- Wrestling
- Lifting weights
- Etc..
These are all part of their system to stay focused and be the best.
Most business owners I talk to don’t lack ambition—they usually know what they want.
But more often than not, they aren’t single-minded about one goal.
Plus, they don’t have a system to help them maintain their energy and focus—especially when business and family life get stressful.
When stress hits, they burn out and get exhausted.
So, take a leaf out of the fighter’s handbook:
Focus on one overarching goal.
Eliminate distractions—not by trying harder to focus, but by having a system that supports your goal.

Do you send handwritten letters anymore? ✉️
Yesterday, I fondly remembered when I used to send letters to a pen pal at school.
When I was 9 years old, my teacher, Mrs. Hopkins, arranged for the children in the class to exchange letters with children in France.
My pen pal was called François from southern France.
All I remember about François was that he was a keen sportsman and loved ‘hockey sur glace’ (ice hockey).
I recall writing a letter to him one day. At that time, I barely knew any French; let alone how to conjugate a verb!
I had to look up every French word in the dictionary.
I vividly remember writing a passage where I told François, “Je jouer football.” In English that would be like saying, “I to play football.”
Written correctly in French it would be, “Je joue au football.”
I imagine he understood what I was saying and maybe even had a giggle!
My broken French reminded me of the approach 99% of men take when trying to lose weight and improve their health.
They go off things they read on the Internet; 75 Hard, paleo, keto, and so on...
These workouts and diets are not wrong per se but they’re not effective or sustainable over the long-term.
So what happens?
You lose weight for a few months, only to gain it all back within 6-12 months.
That’s called yo-yo dieting.
At this point, you have two choices. You can continue to tell yourself you’ll ‘go it alone’ and do things how you’ve always done them...
Thus leading to the same result (the definition of insanity).
OR...

I'm not big on New Year's resolutions. And while the start of every year is simply an arbitrary number, I like to use it as an opportunity to reflect, set new goals and challenge myself.
One of my resolutions for 2020 was to dress more smartly. Although, in truth, I actually started in back in December, because I believe that if something's worth doing, it's worth doing today.
Since I've been wearing suits, blazers, pocket squares and shoes on a regular basis, I've learned several lessons. It's amazing how people's perception of you can change once you put more thought into the way you address. You can argue that's your perception, rather than theirs, but my experience has shown otherwise.
Although, perhaps what I've found to be the most important insight is the way you begin to see yourself. Dressing smartly (whatever your style) changes the way you think, carry yourself and simply makes you feel better about yourself in general.
Changing the way I dress has reinforced to me that the more you care and respect for yourself, the better you feel about yourself. However, this doesn't just apply to clothes.
The way your body looks is equally important for your confidence and self-esteem. What good is it having nice clothes if you don't like what's under them? I know many people who don't like to put on nice clothes that they spent a lot of money on, because they don't like the way their body looks in them.
Though it's funny, most would agree that changing your style of clothing is simple. Yet many have this perception that changing the way their body looks is out of their control.
Let me make it clear for you: Your physical appearance and fitness is one of the few things in life that is totally in your control. You've just convinced yourself it isn't.
If one of your New Year's resolutions is to lose weight and feel confident about the way you look, reach out to me about my coaching. There's no time like the present!

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON SUPPLEMENTS
You aren't going to find the magic fat burning answer in supplements.

You might be behaving in a counter-productive way by training to the max each day. Rest and recovery is the new sexy in 2020 along with maximising your workouts by training efficiently.
