📍 Based on most information available online, the official languages in Senegal are French and Arabic, but it is a lot easier to find an English-speaking person there than in other African countries (e.g. Republic of Cameroon) where the official language is stated to be English. 🌍

But this was just the introduction to the context for you. We were doing research about our potential users in Senegal, and most of the locals there, in reality, speak their national language called Wolof. Even though Wolof has an alphabet/orthography, the main usage of Wolof is for speaking, due to which a decent percentage of the population cannot read/write, since they do not need the script in their daily life at all. In particular, this relates to our main user persona - the elderly farmers. 🧑🏾‍🌾

📝 Realization of this fact and then a collection of some insights while trying to test the application in Senegal was the very moment when our team faced a true deadlock by realizing that everything our tech team has done before, stopped working immediately because the users simply cannot understand what is happening in our application's flow, what is written on the buttons, and so on.

📱 A mobile app is a collection of connected experiences. It’s our job to make those experiences cohesive and frictionless. This is no small task. This is a fascinating challenge for us and we are currently analyzing the existing case studies as well as experimenting with extraordinary visual/intuitive approaches for revitalizing our product's interface in the above-described market we target. While the situation might seem to be similar to designing for visually impaired people, it is not. Interactions must be text-free but intuitive and aligned with users’ desired outcomes.

While we are well aware that this is quite a unique challenge and something unprecedented for many, even strong UX designers/researchers, we would appreciate any suggestions on methodologies or best practices you might have in mind while we go through the customer development process.
