Healthcare professionals are searching for ways to sanitize surfaces and the air to reduce the number of healthcare acquired infections.

A recent study evaluated the potential of lavender essential oil to help sanitize hospitals. Diffusion of lavender in a hospital (2.4 mL of the oil every 24 hours in an area 45 m2) reduced the number of bacteria in all hospital areas the oil was diffused in. The research suggests that essential oils have potential for sanitizing hospital environments.
