Scotland Tackles Period Poverty by Making Period Products Free
Period poverty is when those on low incomes can’t afford period products. In a 2018 survey, about 25% of respondents at school, college or university in Scotland said they struggled to access period products.
Later that year, the Scottish government made history by becoming the first country in the world to provide period products for free to students. Since the scheme was launched, two-thirds of respondents said they had received free period products from their school, college or university in the past year. 84% said it had a positive impact on them.
Now, period products are free in Scotland for “anyone who needs them”. The Period Products Act states that obtaining the free period products should be neither “complex nor bureaucratic”: items should be freely accessible from council or educational institutions, without people having to ask for them. They should not have to justify why they need them or the amount needed. There should also be no forms to complete and no other information required for people to access the products unless it's needed for design or postal delivery.

Good News for Australia’s Great Barrier Reef
Two-thirds of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef showed the largest amount of coral cover in 36 years, but the reef remains vulnerable to increasingly frequent mass bleaching, an official long-term monitoring program reported on Thursday.
In the northern region, the average hard coral cover grew to 36% in 2022 from a low of 13% in 2017, while in the central region hard coral cover increased to 33% from a low of 12% in 2019 – the highest levels recorded for both regions since the institute began monitoring the reef in 1985.
However, in the southern region (which generally has higher hard coral cover than the other two regions), the cover fell to 34% in 2022 from 38% a year earlier. According to the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences (AIMS)’s annual report, the loss of coral cover was due to crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks. Bleaching remains a big concern.
The recovery comes after the fourth mass bleaching in seven years and the first during a La Nina event, which typically brings cooler temperatures. While extensive, the institute said, the bleaching in 2020 and 2022 was not as damaging as in 2016 and 2017.
