AGYWEN Commemorates the International Day of the African Child 2026
On this International Day of the African Child, the Asibambane Girls and Young Women Empowerment Network (AGYWEN) joins millions across Africa and the world in celebrating the resilience, potential, and rights of every African child.
This important day reminds us that children are not only the leaders of tomorrow but rights holders today. Every child deserves access to quality education, healthcare, protection from violence and exploitation, and meaningful participation in decisions that affect their lives.
Despite significant progress, many children—particularly girls—continue to face challenges such as child marriage, teenage pregnancy, abuse, neglect, poverty, and barriers to education. These challenges rob children of their dreams and deny them the opportunity to reach their full potential.
As AGYWEN, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of children through advocacy, education, community engagement, and empowerment initiatives. We call upon governments, development partners, civil society organizations, communities, parents, and young people to work together to create a safe, inclusive, and enabling environment where every child can thrive.
On this day, we amplify the voices of children and renew our collective responsibility to ensure that their rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled.

From Survivors to Empowered Young Women

Once trapped or being at risk of child marriage and teenage motherhood, 50 girls supported by MR&MF project are rewriting the narrative of their stories.

Through comprehensive life skills training, these girls have acquired sewing skills thereby renewing hope and confidence.

What once seemed like the end of their dreams has become the beginning of a progressive future. Learning and building practical skills, caring for their children, and proving that their circumstances do not determine their potential.

"I thought my education was over when I became a teen mother. Today, I am back in school and learning sewing skills to build a better future for my child and myself."

These young women are no longer Defined by circumstances—but rather Refined by their resilience, determination, and courage to dream again.
Every girl deserves a second chance. Every girl deserves a better future.

ASIBAMBANE GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN EMPOWERMENT NETWORK (AGYWEN) STATEMENT ON THE REPORTED 518 TEENAGE PREGNANCIES IN BUBI DISTRICT MATEBELELAND NORTH, BULAWAYO by Herald Online ON 28 MAY 2026

AGYWEN is deeply concerned by reports by the herald online on 28 May 2026 indicating that 518 girls fell pregnant in Bubi District. Matebeland North Province Bulawayo. This alarming situation represents not just a statistic, but hundreds of young lives whose education, health, safety, and future opportunities are at risk.
As an organization committed to advancing the rights, empowerment, and protection of girls and young women, AGYWEN strongly condemns all forms of abuse, exploitation, child marriage, and circumstances that contribute to teenage pregnancies. We firmly believe that every girl has the right to education, protection, healthcare, and the opportunity to reach her full potential.
One girl falling pregnant while still a child is one too many. The reported figure of 518 girls is a wake-up call for all of us. It highlights the urgent need for strengthened prevention efforts, comprehensive sexuality education, increased access to youth-friendly health services, stronger child protection systems, and greater community engagement in safeguarding girls.
We call upon the Government of Zimbabwe, traditional leaders, parents, schools, faith-based organizations, development partners, and all stakeholders to work together to address the root causes of teenage pregnancies, including poverty, gender inequality, sexual abuse, child marriage, and limited access to information and services.
Girls belong in classrooms, not in situations that force them to abandon their dreams and aspirations. Every stakeholder has a responsibility to create a safe and supportive environment where girls can thrive, learn, and succeed.
AGYWEN and its partners remains committed to advocating for policies and programmes that protect child rights, girls' rights, promote education, and empower young women across Zimbabwe.

On this World Menstrual Health Day, AGYWEN calls for a shift in the conversation — menstrual health is not just a women’s issue, it is a societal issue.
For far too long, men and boys have been left out of discussions around menstruation. This gap fuels stigma, misinformation, and silence — making it harder for girls and young women to access the knowledge, products, and support they need to manage their periods with dignity.
We believe that educating men and boys is essential. When men understand menstrual health, they become allies — supporting access to sanitary products, advocating for safe and inclusive spaces, and helping to break harmful taboos.
Knowledge is power. Inclusion is progress.
Let’s create a world where no girl feels ashamed, excluded, or unsupported because of her period.
Together, we can normalize menstruation, improve access, and ensure dignity for all.

Under the Constitution of Zimbabwe (Section 61) and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (Article 13), every child has the right to express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings.

Children should feel safe to speak openly without fear of punishment or discrimination. When girls can express themselves, they build confidence and become leaders of tomorrow.
