Hichilema promotes his aide-de-camp after Chingola stone attack

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has elevated his aide-de-camp, Shapa Wakung’uma, from Deputy Commissioner of Police to Commissioner of Police, Special Duties, in recognition of his bravery during the recent stone attack in Chingola.

The promotion follows Wakung’uma’s swift action last Saturday when a group of unruly individuals began throwing stones at the President while he addressed marketeers affected by the Chiwempala Market fire.

As chaos broke out, Wakung’uma quickly mobilised the security detail to form a protective shield around the Head of State and whisked him to safety, preventing what could have been a serious injury to the President.

Shapa Wakung’uma, a decorated judoka and policeman was on 23 January 1976 in Kalabo, Western Province.

He began his judo journey at just 12 years old at Malengwa in Mongu under the guidance of Irish Catholic priest Jude McKenna.

By 1995, at just 19, Shapa was already coaching a team of judokas from Mongu who competed in a national championship in Lusaka.

After the tournament, while his students returned home, Shapa headed to Lilayi Police College, where he joined the Zambia Police Service as a bandsman, inspired by his love for music nurtured at St John’s Secondary School in Mongu.

In the third quarter of 2021, Wakung’uma published his autobiography titled Judo: The Sport That Leveraged My Life, where he chronicles his journey from a determined boy in Mongu to a two time Commonwealth judo champion, respected police officer and now aide-de-camp to the Republican President.

The book also touches on his retirement in public interest in February 2019 following the Sesheke parliamentary by-election and his eventual return to public service.

Shapa is also a holder of a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) from Cavendish University and a Master of Arts in Defence and Security Studies from the University of Z
