BOTSWANA
Air Botswana has suspended its Gaborone-Cape Town route as a result of the recent grounding of CemAir. The airline is rerouting all Cape Town ticketed passengers via Johannesburg at no additional charge.
DUBAI/ NEW ZEALAND
Emirates will launch a new daily service to Auckland, via Bali, on 14 June.
The flight will operate year-round, complementing the two daily services between Dubai and Bali that currently operate in the Northern hemisphere summer months.
KENYA
Kenya Airways has added three more weekly flights on its Johannesburg route, reinstating early morning flights on certain days, from 06 June. The flights will operate on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
At the same time, the airline will launch its new direct service to Cape Town, which will operate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
MAURITIUS
Air Mauritius has added a fourth weekly flight on its Durban route, effective 18 April.
In addition to its Monday, Wednesday and Saturday flights, the airline will now also operate a flight on Sundays.
QATAR AIRWAYS
Qatar Airways will no longer allow passengers who have upgraded using either money or loyalty points, ‘Qmiles’ or ‘Qcredits’, to enter the airport lounges befitting their upgraded status. Passengers may only access the lounges as per their originally ticketed cabin.
The new policy applies to all classes of upgraded passengers.
RWANDA - NIGERIA/ GHANA AND SOUTH AFRICA
RwandAir will launch four weekly flights to Abuja, Nigeria from 15 April with the routing being Kigali-Abuja-Accra (Ghana). The flights will be available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
RwandAir’s current daily flight between Kigali and Johannesburg is scheduled to connect with the new Abuja service.
The Zimbabwean government has granted rights to RwandAir to commence Kigali-Harare-Cape Town flights on 16 May. The flights between Harare and Cape Town will operate four times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
SOUTH AFRICA
FlySafair has rolled out the test phase of its in-flight mobile point-of-sale system, AviaPay, making it the first low-cost carrier to offer cashless transactions on all its flights. Currently, AviaPay is only available for catering services; however, plans are in place to offer a wider range of products, such as in-flight payments for car rental or airport parking. The new service accepts all Visa and MasterCard products, meaning that payment can be made with either a credit or debit card.
FlySafair has added Lanseria-George flights to its schedule for May to October and has upped frequencies on the route over peak holiday periods, such as school holidays and long weekends. The airline will operate 142 flights on this route in March and 138 in April, but only 73 in May.
According to CemAir’s CEO, good progress is being made with South African Civil Aviation Authority regarding reinstatement of the affected aircraft's airworthiness certificates. Inspection, the next phase of the review, is imminent and could see the airline starting limited operations. While CemAir offered a limited schedule between 17-20 February their flights were operated by a third party operator.
TRAVEL ALERT
INDIA
Travellers to India should note the recent announcement that Mumbai Airport will be closed for six hours on 9 and 10 April for allow for the airport authority to undertake pre-monsoon maintenance work on the runways and landing systems.
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand is on high alert as they await the imminent arrival of Cyclone Gita. The cyclone, which devastated Tonga last week, is expected to bring 24-48 hours of heavy rain and severe gales. The worst affected areas are expected to be Taranaki, the Kapiti coast, the Marlborough Sounds, Nelson, the West Coast and the east coast as far down as Canterbury.
Air New Zealand is warning passengers to expect significant disruption to domestic and international flights between Tuesday and Thursday and, while Metlink bus and train services in Wellington will be running to schedule, commuters in the capital have been advised to consider not going to work as the storm is expected to peak in the city during Tuesday morning’s rush hour. Flooding is expected on State Highways 1 and 2 and strong winds on the Rimutakas in the evening.
OR TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
EVACUATION MAY IMPACT FLIGHT SCHEDULES
OR Tambo International Airport is currently undergoing a precautionary evacuation (Monday, 19 February) after officials found an unattended bag within the terminal buildings.
Travellers can anticipate that this evacuation may temporarily impact operations this afternoon while ground staff return to duty and flights are restored to their scheduled arrival and departure times.

MADAGASCAR
No new cases of plague outbreak have been reported in Madagascar this month, and the infection numbers have stabilised in many districts which have previously reported active cases.
The South African National Institute of Communicable Diseases has noted that the plague outbreak is being controlled and interventions seem to be working. Furthermore, no case of the plague is reported to have been exported from Madagascar to other countries to date.
Measures in place to control spread include arrival and exit screening (temperature monitoring) at the airport.
The World Health Organization has moderated their risk assessment for the region, and the initial high alert has now been changed from moderate to low.
SOUTH AFRICA
British Airways (operated by Comair) has added two daily flights to its Johannesburg-Port Elizabeth route.
The new flights depart from OR Tambo International Airport at 13h30 and 15h30 daily except for Saturdays. The return flight to Johannesburg will depart from Port Elizabeth at 15h44 and 17h10 respectively.
Airlink has added a second direct flight to its Cape Town -Nelspruit KMIA routing. The additional flights operate every afternoon of the week except Saturday.
Effective 01 December 2017, Kulula will no longer be accepting cash for payment of onboard menu items. Payment can be made using debit/credit card payments.
ZIMBABWE
Harare International Airport has officially been renamed to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. The new name was implemented at a ceremony on 09 November.
