Risk Factors of Violence Against Women and Girls

Women who experience multiple forms of discrimination are at a higher risk of violence and more vulnerable to its severe consequences.

πŸ”Έ Violence Against Adolescent Girls: Adolescent girls are more at risk of intimate partner violence than adult women. By the age of 19, almost 1 in 4 girls (24%) who have been in a relationship have already faced physical, sexual, or psychological abuse from a partner.

πŸ”Έ Partner Violence and Gender Inequality in the Caribbean: A study across five Caribbean nations (Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago) found that women in relationships with men who hold beliefs reinforcing male dominance and gender inequality are more likely to experience domestic violence. Controlling behaviors towards women’s bodies, autonomy, and social contacts are strongly linked to increased intimate partner violence.

πŸ”Έ Women with Disabilities: Women with disabilities face a significantly higher rate of intimate partner violence than those without disabilities. Studies, including one from the European Union, highlight that the risk is even greater for women with disabilities living on low incomes.

Addressing these risk factors is critical to reducing violence against women and girls globally. Let’s work together to challenge these inequalities and create a safer world for everyone. πŸ’ͺ
