Driving in the Rain – Stay in Control
When driving in the rain, your goal is simple: stay calm and stay predictable.
1. Stay Calm and Set Up the Car
Switch your wipers on, turn your headlights on, and set your aircon to demist mode to keep your windows clear. Visibility comes first.
2. Reduce Your Speed
As a rule of thumb, drop your speed by around 20%. Wet roads mean reduced traction — especially when braking.
3. Increase Following Distance
Your stopping distance increases in the rain. Give yourself more space so you’re not forced into sudden braking.
4. Use the Right Lights — Not Hazards
Avoid driving with your hazards on. It makes it difficult for other drivers to read your intentions. Rather use your headlights and fog lamps if visibility is poor.
5. Drive Smoothly and Predictably
Gentle steering, braking, and acceleration keep the car stable and reduce the risk of losing control.
