Wordworks
Wordworks supports the literacy and language learning of very young children from under-resourced communities. We believe that by working with parents, teachers, volunteers and the wider community, together we can tackle the crisis of low literacy rates in South Africa and ensure that our children achieve their full potential.

At Wordworks, we believe every child deserves opportunities to develop their language and literacy skills in ways that support their individual learning journey.
Our STELLAR: Special Needs programme uses stories, activities, and meaningful interactions to create engaging learning experiences for every child.

Every classroom is unique, and so is every learner.
This week, we’re featuring Carin Nieuwoudt from Ligstraal Skool in Paarl as she reflects on her experience using the Stellar: Special Needs materials in her Grade R classroom.
She shares how roleplay and storytelling have become powerful tools in her teaching, helping learners engage more actively and enjoy early literacy in a way that feels natural and fun for them.
She also reflects on the positive difference the Stellar: Special Needs materials are making in her classroom, especially in learner participation and day to day teaching practice.

"When I started using the programme, I could see the difference."
During a Stellar: Special Needs training in the Western Cape, we spoke to Marike Slabber from Carel du Toit Centre about her experience using the Stellar: Special Needs materials in her Grade R classroom.
From learner engagement to practical classroom application, her reflections highlight the value of equipping teachers with evidence based early literacy resources that support inclusive learning for every child.
Watch her share how the programme is making a difference.

is proud to unveil our latest Home-School Partnerships (HSP) graduates- Hillwood Primary School!
The school has been part of the programme for a number of years, and we are proud to see it going from strength to strength in its efforts to strengthen the connection between schools and families.
Through HSP, Hillwood Primary School has worked to create meaningful partnerships with parents and caregivers, empowering them with the knowledge and tools to better support their children’s language, literacy and learning journeys at home.
This achievement reflects the commitment of the school leadership, educators and families who continue to work together to create a strong foundation for children to thrive.
After completing eight weeks of training, these dedicated parents are leaving the programme better equipped to support their children's learning at home.
A big thank you to the parents, facilitators and school leadership for making this journey a success. Together, we are strengthening learning beyond the classroom.
Congratulations, Hillwood Primary School - we celebrate this milestone with you!
The Home-School Partnership parent education programme can be offered across the Foundation Phase. The programme is designed to facilitate a space for parents in which to share ideas and resources, build confidence and skills to support and stimulate informal learning at home.
