There’s an interesting shift happening in the UK around data ownership…

The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 is starting to open the door for regulators to influence how organisations access and move their own data — and importantly, how vendors charge for it.

We’re not at a point where extraction fees are banned, but the direction is clear:
- making it harder (or more expensive) to leave a platform is under pressure.

Right now, many businesses are still paying significant fees just to extract their own archived data when switching vendors.

That raises a simple question…
who actually owns the data?

This isn’t in South Africa (yet), but these things tend to ripple.

In the meantime, one of the reasons we like working with Libraesva is simple:
- they don’t charge for data extraction.
Their view is that your data is yours — full stop.

Feels like the industry might be heading that way anyway.

If you’re evaluating archiving or security platforms, it’s probably worth asking upfront:
what does it cost me to leave?
