A standard four-year nursing degree provides the essential foundation for patient care. However, the rapidly shifting demands of local hospitals and international healthcare systems require specialized skills that go beyond the traditional curriculum.

To bridge this immediate industry gap, the Saint Tonis College, Inc. College of Nursing officially integrated a series of targeted micro-credentials aligned with the Commission on Higher Education CMO No. 1, series of 2025.

The new framework offers short, competency-based programs that equip student nurses and alumni with specific, job-ready certifications. According to the institution's framework, these courses are designed to complement the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree by providing flexible, lifelong learning pathways through face-to-face, online, and blended delivery formats.

The driving force behind the framework
The successful rollout of these four specialized courses stands as a major institutional milestone achieved by the College of Nursing under the leadership of Dean Constancio K. Balbin, Jr. Serving as the brainchild behind the four targeted micro-credential tracks, Dean Balbin envisioned a supplementary training system that directly answers the hiring demands of modern healthcare employers.

Translating this vision into approved CHED applications required dedicated technical work. Ronna Mae B. Gavino, the designated personnel in charge of the department's micro-credential programs, took on the primary responsibility of crafting and finalizing the structural proposals for the four courses.

To ensure the framework met national educational standards, the nursing department worked in close collaboration with the Center for Learning and Innovation Office. At the top level, this academic shift materialized through the strong push, active commitment, and leadership of School President Dr. Kathleen L. Guimbatan.

Strengthening trauma and specialized care
Instead of waiting for graduation to acquire specialized training, nursing students can now secure targeted credentials. To enhance pre-hospital and trauma response capabilities, the college partnered with the Philippine Red Cross Kalinga chapter. Together, they now offer a Philippine Qualifications Framework Level 5 micro-credential in "Basic Emergency Care and Stabilization" for Emergency Medical Technicians.

For students aiming to focus on vulnerable demographics, the institution collaborated with TESDA Kalinga to provide a Level 5 certification in "Basic Care for Special Needs Clients" under the Caregiving track. These non-stackable, standalone courses ensure that the nursing students gain practical competencies that directly translate to better bedside and emergency care.

Bridging the gap for global practice
Recognizing the global trajectory of its nursing graduates, the department also expanded its training to cover international employment requirements. Through a partnership with ASAP Nexus Academy, the college rolled out a Level 6 "IELTS/PTE High-Bandscore Communication Proficiency" course.

This specific credential targets the strict language proficiency barriers that often delay local nurses from practicing in foreign healthcare systems like the United Kingdom or Australia.

Additionally, a Level 5 "Medical Terminology and Transcription Basics" course is offered to strengthen the students' health informatics and clinical documentation skills, a required administrative component in modern hospital settings.

By institutionalizing these targeted micro-credentials, the College of Nursing is actively shifting how healthcare education is delivered in the region. The department ensures its graduates step into the medical field not just holding a college diploma, but carrying a verified portfolio of technical and global competencies.
