A friend of mine, a fellow massage therapist, got a phone call that I'm sure every LMT has received. "I want a deep tissue and I haven't found a massage therapist who can give me what I want. They never go deep enough." I would like to address this statement. First of all most therapist who say they give a deep tissue know what they are doing. I don't believe the guy on the other end of the call understood the difference between deep tissue massage and deep pressure applied during a massage. I understand that some people feel that if they are not sore after a massage that they didn't get their money's worth. I am here to tell you that massage is not supposed to be painful. Generally if there is discomfort during a massage it is because the muscle was already tender. We as massage therapist are here to help relieve the pain not to add to it. On that note just about every therapist does know someone who can be a little heavy handed. So if you are looking for a deep tissue massage(muscles that are deeper into the body) most therapist are trained to do that, however a deep pressure massage maybe be harder to come by if you don't know how to ask for it.
By the way, I am not a heavy handed massage therapist, but I do know how to relieve muscle tension.
