They’re not being naughty, they’re overwhelmed!
Dogs will give us many subtle cues that they are getting uncomfortable or over excited long before they start barking and lunging. It’s our job to notice these signs and support our dogs the best we can by going at their pace not what we think they should be doing.
In these situations, you want to reward them when they notice the trigger, rather than waiting for them to react. If they do kick off, the best thing you can do is create distance. The greater the distance the better the chance your dog will be able to notice and not react.
