My newest album Sentinel Rising was recorded with raw drum sounds from my Roland e-kit module; no MIDI, no reverb, no mixing. Only the unedited audio from the preset kits I made on the brain; I only adjusted the volume and mastered the songs in GarageBand (drums were recorded in mono too btw!)

If you can still record and play acoustic drums that’s still amazing because it’s become very difficult in today’s age. However if you’ve got your hands on an E-kit, you’ve got unlimited power in your hands. The amount of options for any type of percussion sound you want no matter the type, is truly exceptional and the sounds have just gotten better over the past decade; in the studio you can produce yourself any way you like and with MIDI, plus good drum samples, you could sound like a professional on any budget. It is a learning curve to integrate electric drums into a live setting but can be done successfully as more younger people are using them and there’s untapped potential to the decades of drumming ahead.

Drums are a very weird instrument and I’ve constantly learned about them and how they can be used. Whether it’s my new electric kit or my beautiful acoustic drums that I’ve owned, percussion is an incredible way to communicate through music 🥁
