Beam saws to bean tins.
It sounds like a joke, but it’s the reality of how industrial machines move through the UK.
A machine is manufactured in Germany.
It’s shipped to the UK through a middleman.
A customer uses it for years, repairs it, keeps it running as long as possible.
Eventually it reaches end-of-life.
And then what happens?
It doesn’t get rebuilt.
It doesn’t get upgraded.
It doesn’t get repurposed.
It gets scrapped.
Most of that scrap is exported overseas, melted down, and turned into low-value commodities.
Sometimes literally tin cans.
Meanwhile, the same UK factory still needs a machine — so they import another new one.
Ship it in.
Use it.
Scrap it.
Ship it out again.
A loop of heavy global logistics, wasted materials, and a strange kind of industrial amnesia where we forget the value of what we just melted down.
We turn precision-engineered machines into tins, then buy another machine from the other side of the world.
No moral.
No sales pitch.
Just an odd part of modern manufacturing that’s easy to miss unless you work around it.
