30-year-old Chevy Omar Jones has been sentenced to life in prison, with eligibility for parole after 51.5 years, for the December 3, 2019, murder of 31-year-old Robert Leroy Junior. In a fit of rage, Chevy shot Robert at his southeast Wichita duplex after discovering Robert had an intimate relationship with his child’s mother that summer.
Police were dispatched to a shooting in the 8500 block of E Parkmont near Pawnee & Rock around 2 AM that morning. Upon arrival officers located Robert Junior gravely injured outside his home. A neighbor had heard gunshots & discovered Robert covered in blood with a gunshot wound to the head. Despite efforts to save him, Robert passed away at the hospital later that morning. Investigators found a blood trail leading from the driveway to the house, spent shell casings both inside & outside the residence, & additional evidence of gunfire throughout the scene.
The investigation revealed that Robert was involved in a romantic relationship with the mother of Chevy's child during the summer of 2019 while Chevy was incarcerated. After discovering this on October 19, 2019, Chevy violently assaulted her, repeatedly strangling & punching her inside her vehicle, all while their four-year-old child sat in the backseat.
In the months that followed, Chevy gained access to his then girlfriend's social media accounts, effectively locking her out. Posing as her, he engaged in flirtatious conversations with Robert from November 30 until the morning of the shooting. On the day of the incident, they discussed plans for the woman to visit Robert’s house, with text messages exchanged that included inquiries about whether Robert had condoms & if anyone else would be present. The last message from Robert came at 2:10 AM, asking, "You at the door?" Just nine minutes later, at 2:19 AM, Robert's neighbor would call 911, marking the start of a tragic turn of events.
A few days after the shooting, when officers tried to arrest Chevy, he rammed into an unmarked police car during a high-speed chase, further adding to his charges. The police chase ended at a Walmart where Chevy was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit. In the pocket of a coat that Chevy threw while he was fleeing, police recovered a 9mm handgun that matched the caliber used in Robert's murder.
During sentencing, Chevy was briefly removed from the courtroom after an outburst during the victim’s family impact statements. He maintained his innocence, insisting he did not kill Robert. He acknowledged making poor choices, stating he had “blindly followed the wrong crowd” at times, yet continued to deny any involvement in the murder, claiming he never would have taken things “that far.”
In total, Chevy was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder, aggravated domestic battery, criminal damage to property, criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, & misdemeanor domestic battery. His sentence for the murder carries a life term, with eligibility for parole only after 51.5 years due to his extensive criminal history, which includes over 20 prior convictions. At the time of parole eligibility, Chevy will begin serving the additional 31 months for his crimes related to the police chase & assault.
