Juneteenth honors the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday commemorates the date of June 19, 1865, when enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free – more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday has been celebrated for over 150 years, but was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
CSEA also successfully lobbied for state legislation to unmistakably clarify that Juneteenth is a paid holiday for all classified employees in California’s public schools as a result of the federal law signed in 2021. CSEA’s class-action lawsuit settlement against districts who failed to recognize the Juneteenth holiday benefited more than 25,000 CSEA members, who received over 100,000 hours in comp-time and more than $8 million in back pay.

All CSEA offices are closed in observance of Juneteenth.
