Meet Garrett Showers, a bright student from the Waterloo Career Center whose programming skills landed him a fantastic work-based learning experience with Allen Hospital!
ㅤ
Over the summer, Garrett collaborated directly with the hospital staff to create a custom video game to help celebrate Allen Hospital's 100th Anniversary this weekend. This is hands-on engagement and real-world experience at its absolute best!

Garrett credits his Intro to Programming class at the WCC for giving him the problem-solving approaches he needed for development. He found that working with the hospital staff was a powerful learning experience:

“I learned a lot about what a real work environment in game development might feel like. Getting to collaborate with staff made it even more unique. It is not something most people my age get to do, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”

Garrett spent about 55 hours on the project, and his dedication paid off. Kristin Schaefer, Community Engagement Program Manager, Unity Point-Allen Hospital, shared high praise for his work:

Meet Imani and Nevaeh! This summer, they worked with the only State of Iowa Graphic Design Apprenticeship program through the House of Fashion, with support from the Northeast Iowa Workforce Development Board.

They explored the world of Adobe and gained real-world experience creating professional projects — skills that will stay with them well beyond the summer.
