Operational Security (OPSEC) starts with all of us. ⚓
The information we share—online and offline—can impact the safety of our service members, families, and the broader military community.
Being mindful of what we share is one helpful way we contribute to that responsibility.
As military operations continue in and around Iran, we know many military families are urgently seeking information. The uncertainty is real. The waiting is hard. The instinct to share updates and stay connected is completely human.
At moments like this, it is critical to keep Operations Security (OPSEC) top of mind.
For some, this may be your first time hearing the term. For others, this is an important reminder that OPSEC matters most during heightened operations.
OPSEC is the practice of safeguarding information that could be collected, analyzed, and pieced together to reveal sensitive details. Even unclassified, well-intentioned posts can create operational risk when small fragments of information are combined.
Here is what to avoid sharing publicly:
-Troop movements or current locations
-Names, ranks, units, or identifying details
-Deployment dates, flight times, departure points, or return timelines
-Photos that include base landmarks, badges, schedules, or background details
Practicing OPSEC is not about limiting connection or support. It is about exercising judgment and awareness in what is shared publicly. When we pause before posting, we help protect our service members, their units, and our entire military community.
Also, if you see someone accidentally break OPSEC, we encourage you to educate them kindly and privately, recognizing that everyone is working to navigate a range of emotions in this moment.
