A Closer Look at How Kids and Moms Stay Connected Over Time - Population Reference Bureau 05/11/2026

This Mother's Day, research reminds us that the bond between moms and their adult children is rarely a straight line—and growing up doesn't always mean growing apart. 💙

A new study led by Mieke Beth Thomeer at the University of Alabama at Birmingham explored how mother-child relationships evolve across the 20s, and the findings are more nuanced than you might expect. Her team identified six distinct patterns, from consistently close to gradual shifts in contact, emotional distance, and even reconnection.

Some key findings:
🩵 About 1 in 3 young adults maintain consistently high contact AND emotional closeness with their moms throughout their 20s.
💙 Closeness and frequency of contact don't always move together—you can feel deeply connected to your mom even if you're not talking every day.
🩵 Race and gender shape these patterns: Black women are more likely to maintain stable, close ties, while white men are more likely to experience persistent distance or instability.

These insights come from longitudinal data, the kind of long-term research that makes it possible to see how family relationships unfold over time.
