Taking photos of an event that takes place on a rooftop that overlooks the Mall on a picture perfect day, is not a bad gig. Add some happy people that are happy to be there and it makes it a perfect event shoot.

That picture perfect moment when a dancer becomes the dance and nothing else matters…When a photo can capture the passion amidst the rapid motion is when you know the dancer has left it all on the floor. Photographing people speaking is actually more tricky than it seems. I learned that lesson the first time I shot presenters. There isn’t enough photos you can take to be sure you got the right one. They may seem ok in the camera and then you look at them on the computer and it turns out you’ve frozen some very awkward facial expressions that are definitely not flattering so you can only hope you took a lot more to choose from. To add to that, a very cramped small room with people sitting and standing everywhere, and not being able to use flash, forces you to think outside the box and use what you have. Changing angles, using whatever light source available, sneaking between people quietly, etc.
