You see them everywhere on social media, and you probably use them yourself, but do you know how to get the most out of hashtags and how to properly have a strategy around them?
Using relevant, targeted hashtags on your posts and stories is still one of the best ways to get discovered by new audiences on Instagram and this can translate into more engagement, more followers, and more customers for your business.
#️⃣ What to consider?
Before starting to use hashtags, it is important that you ask yourself a few things.
❔Start with asking if the hashtag describes your business, the purpose of your account or your ideal audience?
❔Second, is this something your ideal audience would search for? Put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself how would you search for what you offer.
❔Have you studied your competitors and top influencers to find the hashtags their using? Have your made sure to understand the field your playing? This is a good place to start if you’re looking for ideas.
❔Finally, is the hashtag you want to use popular or niche? You might ask why this is important. And it’s simple: Hashtags are like a live directory - when people use them, they get populated into the hashtag feed. So the reason it’s better to choose a hashtag with less than 500K posts is because your content is then more likely to stay seen. If you are using a hashtag that has over 1M posts, it will be a very fast-moving hashtag and your content is likely to get buried as soon as it’s posted.
〰️ This doesn’t mean that you should never use the popular and trendiest hashtags, but make sure you mix them with other smaller ones that are niche and relevant to your industry and location.
#️⃣ Other things to consider:
▫️Quality is better than quantity. You don’t need to use 30 hashtags in every post. It’s more effective to use between 3 to 8 hashtags by choosing them wisely, and alternating them depending on your image.
▫️You can add hashtags to either the post caption or the comments. But make sure if you decide to post them on the comments to have them ready (to copy and paste) as soon as you post so you don’t loose the momentum and extra engagement you get when you hit publish.
