Every month, we feature a dancer who’s ruffling our feathers in the best way!
Whether they’re a newcomer, a volunteer, or a pillar of the community, we want to celebrate the dancers that make our community what it is! This month, let’s chat with Justin!
Q: How and when did you start dancing Lindy Hop?
A: I started dancing in college after my best friend tried it and said I would love the music (I mainly listened to music from the ‘40s-’60s in high school, like Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis, the Rat Pack, etc.). Gave it a go, and kept with it, dancing anywhere from one to three times a week until I moved out of state and there wasn’t a dance scene to participate in anymore.
Q: Tell us about your favorite moment on the dance floor:
A: I honestly can’t say that I have a favorite memory with LKLD Lindy Hop, but that’s just because there have been so many good ones! My favorite part is definitely the community. The new friendships that I have formed and the growth of existing friendships, both as dance partners and people has been wonderful and keeps me coming back each week!
Q: As our newest addition to the DJ team, who are some artists you’ve discovered that you’ve come to love?
A: I have always loved swing music, so artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Sidney Bechet and Louis Jordan have always been there, but being a DJ has brought me more into the world of contemporary swing bands. I would have to say Naomi and Her Handsome Devils and The Swing Ninjas are two of the artists I have only found in the last year or so that I absolutely love!
