Without fail, there is always a moment during every show opening that I find myself standing on a chair to take a picture of all of the people who have gathered in the gallery to experience community through art. That picture is always my favorite from every opening. It’s like a microcosm of who our community is- people hugging, sharing a story, eating good food together, connecting over the art. That one photo from each show of candid community is like treasure to me.

Trey Thompson gets that. His show, entitled “The Place We Make”, challenged observers to explore the question: How is community made? He painted people that are propelling our community forward. He painted places that have potential but need a little love. But the idea is that ordinary people and their choices are what shape who we are. And it was beautiful to see so many people gathering to witness this work.

His last pieces invited the community to be involved in the process and to make the place on the canvas. He even brought a little Havner’s Frame Shop for the community to paint and we will cherish that canvas forever. We are so thankful for artists like who see what is and what can be. Come see his work this month!

Something to know about the Havner’s: Charlie Havner loves a sunny day. He wants the UV to be 11+, a cloudless bright blue sky, just endless sun-drenched days. I (Trista), on the contrary, LOVE a rainy day. Mostly so I can curl up with a book and some coffee and listen and look and basically just soak in the grey. But a rainy day at the frame shop, especially at the end of the week, is my favorite. I love the idea of making a list and knocking out tasks and powering through all the work that’s been piling up, and since no one really wants to load finished pieces into cars in the rain, it’s quiet around here so there are podcasts aplenty and hard work being done.

Don’t get us wrong, we love to see your faces, but a good ol’ fashioned catchup day never hurt anyone. Enjoy the rain!
