Topeka Police Department Animal Control

Good afternoon, Topeka!
As many of you know, summer is one of our busiest seasons and the ticks/fleas are at an all time high this year. Along with practicing safety and making sure all animals have protection, we wanted to point out our little helper as well.
Today, we wanted to give a shoutout to one of Topeka’s most underappreciated pest control professionals, the mighty opossum!
Although they may have a face only a mother could love, they provide tremendous benefits to our community and play an important role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
These nighttime visitors help control insects and other pests while cleaning up carrion and other organic matter. They are generally non-aggressive, prefer to avoid conflict, and simply go about their business helping nature do what it does best.
So if you spot an opossum wandering through your yard, consider letting it enjoy the buffet. Chances are you’ll benefit from having this helpful neighbor around.
Remember: if you see an opossum, the best thing you can do is leave it alone and let it be wild. If any wildlife is injured during our hours, please call 785-368-9203

What do you mean these reflective tags could help keep me safe if I ever get lost?
Yep, that’s right! Reflective tags catch light from headlights, flashlights, and streetlights making your pet much easier to be seen in the dark. That extra visibility can help drivers, neighbors, or even Animal Control spot them faster if they wander off.
We know mistakes happen, whether it’s a gate that didn’t latch or a slipped leash. These tags are a simple way to add an extra layer of safety during walks or unexpected adventures.
Just a reminder: these are not for identification purposes, just added visibility and safety 🥰
Come grab one at Paws in the Park, we’re here until 2 PM!

Lots going on tomorrow to support and give back to our community!
We’ll be out at Paws in the Park from 10–2, so stop by and say hi 🐾 We’ve got some fun freebies, pet goodies, and “In Case of Emergency” stickers to hand out!
Once you’re done there, don’t forget to head over to Higher grounds coffee shop at 2pm, grab a plate of food and coffee to recharge, and support PANT!
See you guys there! ☀️

This week is Animal Control Appreciation Week! 🐾
We want to give a special thank you to our Animal Control Unit for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to both our community and its animals.
Being an Animal Control Officer doesn’t end at 4 PM. Reports still need to be completed, evidence uploaded, videos labeled, and court documents reviewed. And just when they finally lay down to call it a night, that call for an injured animal comes in and they are right back at it again.
We are incredibly grateful for our four Animal Control Officers who start each day ready to serve. Their compassion, resilience, and work ethic make this unit truly one of a kind.
If you see an Animal Control Officer out this week, take a moment to say thank you! ❤️

Every day is National Pet Day for us, but today is a great reminder to recognize just how much our pets mean to us.
Animals have been shown to help reduce cortisol (those stress hormones) with something as simple as a pet and a wag of the tail… or even a chirp 😉 While that research focuses on cats and dogs, in our experience, we’ve never seen anyone stay grumpy while holding their pet chicken 😅
As Animal Control, we love celebrating all pets today, because we know companionship comes in all shapes and sizes ❤️
Thank you, Topeka, for loving and caring for your animals!
👇 Drop your low-cortisol moments with your pets below, we’d love to see them!
