California sea lions Buoy and Amelia do a great job of holding position while the keepers and veterinary team administer West Nile virus vaccinations. Using positive reinforcement, the sea lions have been trained to station to allow the vaccines to be injected voluntarily. The sea lions are also comfortable working with our veterinary team, which makes routine medical procedures such as this less stressful for the animals. In these photos, Senior Keeper Courtney and Vet Tech Priscilla work together to give Buoy the vaccination, and Senior Keeper Danielle and Keeper Mary work with sea lion Amelia.
The crate you see in the background is also used during crate training sessions. Crate training helps the animal become comfortable in the space voluntarily while being transported. Positive reinforcement from keepers, including lots of fish, makes "crating" a rewarding experience for the animals! On your next visit, be sure to stop by the sea lion feeding session at 3:00 p.m. on Astor Court.

Enjoy this very special of our scaly-sided merganser chicks, filmed in the Sea Bird Aviary. As you can see in the video, the aviary has plenty of foliage and sheltered areas that mimic scaly-sided mergansers natural environment along the banks of wild, free-flowing rivers and streams in the Russian Far East, North Korea, and Northeast China.
WCS is committed to conserving this endangered species of sea duck. Central Park Zoo was the first North American Zoo to successfully breed them in 2011. These ducklings are the first hatched at Bronx Zoo and also the first successful attempt at parent rearing instead of using artificial incubation.
Keeper Tara captured this video of our Andean condors having a moment! Andean condors have a massive wingspan that can reach 10.5 feet! They raise their wings at each other primarily for courtship displays and to establish social dominance. Spreading their massive wings can communicate readiness to mate, assert rank, or defend food sources.
