In recovery from adolescent substance abuse, one of the most powerful (and often repeated) pieces of advice is to “get out of yourself.” This means shifting focus away from our own struggles by serving others- whether reaching out to a newcomer, helping at a meeting, or simply connecting with positive peers and having sober fun.
Far from ignoring self-care, this practice provides relief from obsessive thinking, builds perspective, and strengthens long-term sobriety, backed by both 12-step wisdom and research on helping behaviors.
