Letter carriers face unique challenges when delivering mail, as even normally friendly dogs may become territorial and protective when carriers approach their homes. The following preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of dog attacks:
Secure your dog inside the house, behind a fence, or in another room before the mail carrier arrives
Never allow children to take mail directly from carriers in the presence of the family pet, as dogs may view this as a threatening gesture
Keep dogs on leashes when outside during delivery times
