Consistency builds confidence.
I’ve seen this play out on the fireground. When you’ve practiced something enough times, you move with clarity under pressure… like it’s second nature.

I grew up in the “do as I say, not as I do” generation of parenting.
I’m not blasting my parents by the way… not at all. They did the best they could with what they knew at the time, just like we are now.
And, I’ve seen the same mentality play out for years in the fire service. “Born” into my fire service career under the same mentality from my leadership at the time, my first Captain NEVER wore his SCBA (the air tank on our back that provides fresh breathing air in smokey and hazardous environments)… and yet he expected us to wear it all the time.
Years later when he became the department’s Safety Officer, you can imagine how much stock we put into anything he had to say about operating safely on an incident scene.
The strongest lessons your kids will remember are not the speeches or late night lectures you give when they mess up or things go awry.
No sir… those lessons live and breathe in the moments when they’ve watched you live out what you believe, practicing what you preach when YOU mess up and life gets messy.
