“The Love You Save” is a song by The Jackson 5, released in 1970 as a single and included on their album ABC by Motown Records. Written and produced by The Corporation (Berry Gordy, Freddie Perren, Alphonzo Mizell, and Deke Richards), the track is a pop-soul hit with a runtime of 3:04. It features Michael Jackson’s lead vocals, with brothers Jermaine, Tito, Marlon, and Jackie on harmonies, backed by Motown’s Funk Brothers, including James Jamerson on bass and Gene Pello on drums. The lyrics, delivered with youthful energy, warn a girl against reckless romances, using playful metaphors like traffic signals. Released on May 13, 1970, with “I Found That Girl” as the B-side, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and reached #1 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart.
Recorded at Hitsville West in Los Angeles, “The Love You Save” was the third of four consecutive #1 hits for The Jackson 5 in 1970, following “I Want You Back” and “ABC.” Its upbeat tempo, catchy hooks, and tight production epitomized Motown’s bubblegum soul sound, cementing the group’s teen idol status. The song’s success helped ABC peak at #4 on the Billboard 200. Frequently performed on TV shows like American Bandstand, it remains a staple of their early catalog, covered by artists like Hanson and featured in media like Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).
