Juneteenth and the Sound of Freedom

This week, we honor Juneteenth—June 19, 1865—the day freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas.

But Juneteenth is more than a date in history. It is a living legacy carried through music.

The Birth of Gospel

In the years after emancipation, small wooden churches across the South became places of strength and renewal.

Voices rose in unison—clapping hands, stomping feet, and call-and-response filled the room. Gospel music was born from faith, hope, and the belief that better days were ahead.

The Birth of the Blues

Out on front porches, in fields, and along dusty Delta roads, another sound began to take shape.

A guitar, a voice, and a story. Blues music spoke plainly—about hardship, love, loss, and life as it was truly lived. Every note carried both struggle and resilience.

One Root, Two Voices

Gospel reached upward. Blues spoke outward.

But both came from the same place—a people finding their voice in freedom, telling their story in the only way that could not be taken from them: through music.

Keeping the Legacy Alive

At Quinn Records TM, we honor that tradition by preserving and promoting authentic blues, gospel, jazz, and soul.

These are not just songs—they are history, truth, and the sound of real life.

As Juneteenth approaches, take a moment to listen closely.

In every note, there is a story.
In every song, there is freedom.
