With 33+ years of experience, I help students master content and test-taking strategies to boost scores and confidence. Instruction includes laying out the expectations of each section of the exam in plain English, reviewing content for sections that test content mastery, and teaching specific techniques and broader strategies for maximizing individual performance.

Will there come a day when we’re just as proud of posting that our kid got into a college that accepts most students and wants them to succeed as we are of the top-ranked, highly-rejective school?

Remember a college’s acceptance rate is a headcount measure — it’s based on getting way many more applicants and not growing their freshman class to keep up. It says nothing about quality.

As I told @smerconish on @cnn, too many teenagers and their families are twisting themselves into pretzels to fit someone else’s definition of a dream school. They’re taking every AP class they can, signing up for every club and year-round sport, trying to save the world…for what? A chance at an acceptance to a university that rejects 90%+ of applicants.

If that’s what you want to do, go for it.

But as Smerconish and I discussed, there are plenty of colleges and universities that accept students who want balance in their high school lives—and, by the way, those students go on to have an engaging undergrad experience and get good jobs. I have some examples in my book, “Dream School,” and Smerconish listed some of those institutions on screen.

As the various rankings come out this month, if you’re a parent of teenagers, what do you need to hear/see/do to stop focusing on just the Top 20 schools? Or if you already have a wider lens, how did you get off the treadmill of Ivy-or-bust?
