We're a Massachusetts coalition working to pass a state law to require that criminal offender record information (CORIs) are automatically sealed as soon as someone is eligible.

Yes! A Clean Slate law would help prevent and reduce poverty in MA.

That's why the MA Anti-Poverty Commission recommends automated CORI-sealing.

Thank you State Rep Marjorie Decker and State Senator Sal DiDomenico for including Clean Slate language in S.3095/H.5085, An Act to Significantly Alleviate Poverty.

Several of us testified today at the bill's hearing before the Joint Committee on Children, Families, and People with Disabilities.

An estimated 523,000 (not a typo) people in MA are currently eligible to have their CORIs sealed but a boatload of complex red tape stands in their way, so let's simply automate the system by passing a Clean Slate law THIS SESSION. Clean Slate works and the data makes it clear. Automated record sealing expands access to work and opportunity.

In America, 1 in 3 adults has an arrest or conviction record. Old records continue to appear on background checks, blocking access to jobsโ€”even years after someone has completed their sentence and remained crime-free.

Today, 94% of employers use background checks, and having a record can cut the chances of a callback or job offer nearly in half. Meanwhile, businesses across the country are struggling to find workers.

This isnโ€™t a niche issue, itโ€™s a workforce reality.
