Our Lower School students turned lunchtime into a data collection opportunity for their lunch audit. They collected all the trash and food scrapes during both lower school lunch times, using designated bins for different types of trash. The students then sorted and collected data during Outdoor Ed.
Some of their main takeaways highlighted successes (glows) and opportunities for improvements (grows).
Glows:
- No plastic water bottles; all reusable!
- No styrofoam!
- A lot of reusable lunch box containers and bags!
- Only a handful of items sorted incorrectly!
Grows:
- Biggest category of plastic trash was chips bags and food wrappers.
- Food waste was more than predicted.
- Unopened or uneaten food should be saved for later.
- Napkins can be used more than once.
Next the students will be promoting a Plastic-Free lunch on March 6. Stay tuned for more info!
