We wash out each tie dye batch with alternating hot/cold water rinses and then a final hot water cycle to make sure all excess dye is released. I do not use fabric softener (to avoid irritation). The tie dye process I use takes about 2-3 days, start to finish, and has been fine-tuned over the years to produce my favorite effects.
