❔When is the last time you assessed your daily movement patterns?

These are questions I ask my clients when we train together. These asks do not come from a place of judgment, but rather an invitation to be more aware of how they move throughout their day.

When you pay more attention, and move with more intention in everything you do, that consciousness creates a ripple effect. After time, that intention permeates into the more complex parts of life.

👉As the world continues to go through so much, it feels like we are in our own version of a “great depression.” It makes sense that we may be feeling stressed, anxious, unsettled, worried, fearful, etc., considering the current state of things. It’s no secret that stress affects our body’s ability to function properly, but some don’t know the more direct relationship between the psoas muscle and stress.

👉Your psoas has been coined by many as “the most important muscle in your body.” I am also going to file it under one of the most underrated muscles in the body. Your psoas muscle quite literally connects your upper body to your lower body. The psoas is also responsible for our hip power and agility. A tight psoas decreases our performance in all sports and exercise, and increases stress on the spine putting us at risk for injury.

👉The psoas doesn’t just affect the body’s physical stress, but our mental stress as well. The psoas is a primary “fight/flight/freeze” muscle. It allows us to brace ourselves for impact (fight). It allows us to run away (flight), and it’s the muscle we use to curl up into a fetal position (freeze). When we are in a constant state of worry, stress, or fear, our psoas semi-contracts and stays contracted whether we are aware of it or not.

👉When we are stressed about work, family, or the state of the world, that stress and anxiety has a direct impact on how our body & mind function. Finding ways to de-stress is vital for our health and well-being, and it doesn’t need to be some grand getaway or major life change. If we can start small, and begin to implement functional habits to alleviate stress, these little practices will evolve into a habitual routine to help you stay balanced & grounded.
