Summer Learning Cohort: Firefly Day

Today our learning focused on fireflies and was connected to Fireflies by Julie Brinckloe.

Students practiced a variety of literacy, math, science, and critical thinking skills throughout the lesson:

Literacy Skills
• Multiple-meaning words through an interactive vocabulary game
• Reading comprehension and discussion
• Story elements, critical thinking, and inferencing

Math Skills
• Fact families to strengthen addition and subtraction relationships
• Partners of 10 and doubles fact fluency through UNO math games

Science Connections
• Learned nonfiction facts about fireflies
• Explored how fireflies create light through bioluminescence
• Connected firefly light to glow bracelets and the chemical reactions that produce light

Creative Learning
• Firefly-themed art activity
• Reading with flashlights to create a fun and memorable connection to the story

We love creating lessons that connect reading, math, science, and hands-on learning so students can build skills while developing curiosity about the world around them.
