borhood, some folks may have thought it was fireworks, others may have thought it was a crash, and some people might not have even heard it at all. This puts the public at risk in multiple ways. Back in the day almost everyone had scanners and had the ability to know what was happening right away and could act accordingly. Encryption now days prohibits our ability to act accordingly in a timely manner, by the time we get informed it could be too late. Officers think they need to hide behind encryption for their safety and protection. That is just an excuse. Officers carry guns and armor for safety, NOT ENCRYPTION!!! I will say that swat team's or trained officers executing a plan to apprehend a fugitive or shooter at large ect. should be encrypted, however police miss use encryption heavily everyday. They are using encryption for everyday use. "We The People" The taxpayers pay for those radios. Everything that is said over the radios is public information. We can file a open records request at any given time on what is being said over the radios and by law they have to give us that info and can not delete it because its public information. Everything they say on the radios even on encryption gets recorded. There are several reasons they hide behind encryption. The second someone shows up with a camera they know about it and all of a sudden that camera makes them be accountable for their actions. Transparency. They like to try and hide information from the public. They don't want us to know what's going on. They want to keep us in the dark. This is something to remember when you come to this scanner page looking for info. If you don't see the info you're looking for, this is most likely why. It's because the cops hide behind encryption, don't want to be held accountable and have no transparency. So next time an officer approaches you for information keep this in mind when speaking to them. Remember how much information their hiding from you, so how much information should you give them? Remember people, YOU HAVE RIGHTS!!! Rights are like muscles, If you don't use them you lose them.
