Strange Darling – 7.8 / Dig
Strange Darling surprised me. It blends thriller, horror, and grindhouse energy with a confident, non-linear structure that pulls you in deeper as it unfolds. I saw glimmers of Quentin Tarantino in the pacing and structure, Tobe Hooper in the raw tension, and Rob Zombie in the chaotic brutality.
The acting is sharp, the tension builds without relying on cheap tricks, and the story rewards attention. It doesn’t over-explain. It trusts you to keep up.
One of the biggest standouts for me? It was shot on 35mm Kodak Vision film. That choice gave it a distinct texture and emotional weight. It didn’t just add to the atmosphere—it reignited my own creative drive. I ordered a few rolls from the Film Photography Podcast Store as soon as I got home. This film got me ready to start a new era of photography, with intention and grit.
If you liked Gone Girl or Fresh, or if you’re into movies that feel handmade, unpolished, and smart, Strange Darling is worth your time.
