Kayaked the Tacoma Narrows yesterday. The weather didn’t cooperate but still nice to get out and enjoy some nature. The Narrows is spanned by the twin Tacoma Narrows Bridges, hard to consider the bridges nature but definitely an impressive sight. I also wanted to find one of the building blocks of Puget Sound aquatic life that is disappearing from the ecosystem, Bull Kelp (3rd Image). The Tacoma Narrows holds the biggest collection of bull kelp remaining in the Puget Sound. Scientists have not nailed down definite causes but one hypothesis is global warming of the water, kelp does not live well above 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

I came around a corner at first light and found this recently fledged Great Horned Owl starring at me and its sibling sitting on a nearby bird house. They were raised in an old Red-tailed Hawk nest in the middle of a large field. Very cool to see them venture out and begin hunting on their own.
