I watched this great blue heron take off and fly a short distance across the water to land on rock pile.

I was walking around Smith Cove with a 100-400 and noticed this composition.

Camera phones do quite a bit of computational editing to give you those photos that look amazing straight out of camera, though they are edited, just not necessarily by you:)
Maybe the smart phone does too much editing for your taste or maybe not enough, either way if you want more creative control of the process you may want to try shooting in RAW. You will need to do the editing yourself, though now you have all the data to do so with.
