HOW TO PROCESS YOUR EMOTIONS

There are a few ways that people deal with emotions:

1. Push away / ignore them
2. React to them
3. Process them

Which way is your default?

#1: Push away / ignore them:
When we do this, our emotions stay in our body. This can transform in many different ways including: feeling completely disconnected from yourself, stressed, doing things you told yourself you wouldn’t (instagram/netflix/overeating/overdrinking/sex/etc). This can also lead to you telling others that they should do the same. Why? Because you don’t allow yourself to feel your emotions, you won’t have room for other’s emotions (in a connected way).
#2: React to them:
This might look like yelling or being passing aggressive with your husband for not doing the dishes (instead of feeling the emotion of sad/disappointment). This might look like consistently reaching out to friends to feel better before you try to process it yourself. This might be obsessively thinking about how you should change or what you did wrong.
#3: Process them:
This is when something triggers us and we pause from the external world and go internal. NOT IN YOUR HEAD internally, but in your body. So many of us try to solve an emotion in our head, when the head is what caused it in the first place. Go to the body. Become aware of what parts of your body you feel during this emotion. Keep awareness on these parts. Breathe into them, invite this uncomfortable feeling in like a friend. Be the loving witness and observe. It will eventually disapait and you’ll either feel more centered OR a truer emotion (from anger to sadness maybe). This is how you know you ‘did it right’ instead of just thinking yourself through it. From there we can take appropriate action or make better decisions.

Being aligned with yourself and your purpose doesn’t make all of your days magical and happy, but damn do you feel mission driven. Damn do you feel alive. Damn do you feel fulfilled.
