Sometimes getting scrappy and using what you’ve got produces the best results! We had these big beautiful shelves built for our store, and I quickly realized that it wasn’t particularly safe to be climbing up and down our ladder with huge jars of bulk food past the second shelf or so. Suddenly I had lots of empty space to fill…
I have been trying to figure out a good way to use these shelves to show the beauty of a low waste lifestyle. I knew I for sure did not want to spend a bunch of money buying things to decorate the shelves with, and after a few weeks of posting in different groups online trying to get items at secondhand, I was coming up empty-handed.
today when I was in the shop after a staff meeting, I decided I was going to fill the third shelf with whatever I could find in our shop. I was thinking it would be a great way to display some of our backstock items instead of having them in boxes in our storage room. I started working on the first section and got discouraged pretty quickly, but after digging around the back room and letting my creativity take over, I was able to find several items to put to use.
I used to some expired product to fill a few jars, most of which came from jars that have been donated to us. I used secondhand display products that I got when another much larger store in our area upgraded their displays and discarded all of their old baskets, boxes and crates. I even found a couple of house plants from around the shop and relocated them to the shelves. My vision for the shelves has always been to have several plants on the wall to make it look very green and alive, but plants can get expensive quickly and I’m not ready to make that investment yet.
I am excited to find other pieces to help fill in the shelves and tell the story of how living more sustainably allows us to improve our quality of life while learning to walk more gently on the planet.
